3 Reynolds, George Pickwick Abroad or the The Tour In France.
Lon Thomas Tegg 1839 Full-Leather Very Good  No Jacket 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall Qrowquill, Phillips & Bonner
Reynolds, George, W.M. Pickwick Abroad or The Tour in France. Lon:Thomas Tegg, 1839. 8vo. Frontis & vignette title page, [xvi]; 628pp. Illustrated with forty-one steel-engravings by Alfred Crowquill and John Phillips; and with thirty-three woodcuts by Bonner. Contemporaneous binding, embossed & decorated black 1/2 calf with red leather label, brown boards; no dj: extremeties some bumping and wear, boards some wear. Marbeled end papers, owners inscription inside front free paper, light toning, light foxing primarily on edges of text block borders, plates some foxing with occasional light register on opposite page as typical for this publication. 1st bound edition of a book spoofing the popular Pickwick by Dickens. Reynolds, a prolific author of the day published many romances and miscellanies. This pastiche is clearly a plaigirization of Dickens concepts and was initially published in monthly parts (1838-39), also imitating Dickens form. Today, this would not be tolerated.

4 Times Herald 1939: First Visit of British Monarch To U.S.
Washington, DC Times Herald 1939 very good
King Pays Homage At Mt. Vernon. Washington, DC: Times Herald, June 9, 1939. 12pp, A1-A12 (complete first section). Original newsprint, large masthead, very good condition, short tear left center border not affecting text. Headlines on this front page juxtapose international Allies positioning their heads of state for maximum political appeal, with the details of an impending war that is now just three months off. This paper highlights extrodinary events surrounding this first visit of a British Monarch to the United States. By placing wreaths at both Washington's grave at Mt. Vernon and at the tomb of the American Unknown Soldier, the King and Queen acknowledge the loss of the American soldiers of the Revolution and the birth of America. The first formal acknowledgement by a British Monarch. The timing and political theater, in hindsight, are obvious but no less relevant. Britain and Roosevelt, need the American people behind England in the approaching war. These acts will help Roosevelt with the political support for the lend lease program that provides England with American planes, ships etc. Headlines include: 'King Pays Homage At Mt. Vernon';'Congress Cheers Royal Couple Ring In Capital. Monarch To Place Wreath On Tomb Of Unknown Soldier Late Today'; 'Piping Their Majesties Aboard the Potomac' (heading to large front page picture). 'Nazis Blamed For Riot Over Sarabia Death. Mexico Officials Say Students Did Not Volunteer In Demonstration Against U.S.'; 96 More Refugees In Despair Over Ban By Cuba (These refugees denied asylum are Jews aboard the French vessel Flandre. Like the 907 Jews aboard the more famous St. Louis, they are heading back to France, having been turned back from Cuba and rejected in Mexico.); 'Franco Charged With Food Seizure'; 'Nazis Spurn British Olive Branch'.
